What’s the deal with exams for kids?

What’s the deal with exams for kids?

Bennis Yiu, KG Group Education Programme Manager and former Trinity College Examinations Manager, spills the beans …

Across the broad selection of learning programmes on the market, exam prep courses are among the most popular. Have you ever wondered why there are exams and assessments for young learners?

Cambridge Young Learners of English (YLE), Trinity College Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE), London College of Music (LCM) Early Learning, Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) lead the field among others, and sometimes the choice can be a little overwhelming.

First and foremost, they are markers of development and achievement, used by schools, teachers, parents, and others to assess a child against standardised benchmarks.

Secondly, they develop real skills and rigour in your child’s education through preparing for an exam – whether the skills are in English language, communication, drama, or dance.

Which grade should I enter my child for?

It’s a commonly asked question. If you are debating between two grades, go for the lower one. The reason is a good result brings a greater sense of achievement and shows that your child is ready for the next level.

What should we do when the result is out?

Every child deserves a big pat on the back for being able to complete an exam at such a young age! Regardless of what the result is, for a child to enter an exam room and complete the required tasks in front of a stranger (the examiner!) is worthy of praise for doing a great job. Your support means the whole world.

Most importantly …

Children should be prepared for assessments in a nurturing and engaging environment … most children don’t feel anxious unless they sense that their parents do. So treat an exam programme as just another fun course, and choose the right curriculum and teacher to give your child the most positive experience of learning.
